Kirin Cup: [JPN 0-0 TTO] Gaku Shibasaki on new formation: “It worked better than we’d imagined”

Kirin Challenge Cup 2019
Japan 0 – 0 Trinidad and Tobago

Gaku Shibasaki, who captained Japan in the goalless draw with Trinidad and Tobago in the Kirin Challenge Cup, gave his take on the new three-men defence system.

“I thought there would be many areas that would not turn out well, but it worked better than we’d imagined,” he said.

The Getafe player did see potential in the formation.

“If we are going to use it from now on, we will need to build a team around it. This experiment still has much room for growth.”

Japan will play El Salvador next in the Kirin Challenge Cup on 9 June.
