Albirex CEO steps down

Albirex Niigata announced on 6 November the immediate resignation of club president & CEO Daisuke Korenaga. His stepping down came in light of the club’s recent drive-drinking incident.

On 17 September, two foreign players from the J2 side were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, and were subsequently dismissed on 19 October after charges were filled against them. The club did not report their arrests to the J.League, and allowed both players to continue training with the team, with one of them playing six league games during that period. Korenaga had then made an apology for his action and accepted a pay cut until 31 December.

In his resignation today, he wrote, “I made a big mistake in my judgement and handling of this case. And it caused damage to the club. This has created a stir in the world, and I thought for the club’s credibility to be restored quickly, which is what is most needed right now, I needed to step away.”
