S-Pulse’s eyes on Gonda

Shimizu S-Pulse are in talks to sign Japan international goalkeeper Shuichi Gonda from Portimonense.

Gonda moved to Portugal from Sagan Tosu in 2019, though has yet to play for the Primeira Liga outfit so far this season. The 31-year-old custodian is faring better on the international front, after recently equalling the record set by Seigo Narazaki for seven successive clean sheets.

S-Pulse, currently 17th in J1, have conceded the most number of goals (67) in the league, and want to shore up the defence for next season. Takuo Okubo and Togo Umeda have been alternating in goal this season, but neither were convincing enough to make the position their own. The experienced Gonda can be expected to lead the team, while ensuring he gets the visibility to play in next year’s World Cup Asian qualifiers.

The J1 side is also looking to sign Santa Clara forward Thiago Santana.
