Former Japan manager to lead Vietnam U18 & U19

Various media outlets have reported that former Samurai Blue manager Philippe Troussier has been appointed to lead the Vietnam U18 and U19 teams.

The Frenchman was picked for the role after the resignation of Hoang Anh Tuan, who failed to steer the U18 side to the semifinals of the AFF Championship. According to Fox Sports, his immediate goal is to break through their group in the 2020 AFC U19 Championship qualifiers that starts in November. Vietnam is in the same group as Japan, Mongolia and Guam.

Troussier led Japan for four years from 1998 to 2002, where he won the 2000 Asian Cup and took the team to a historic last 16 of the 2002 World Cup. Since 2018, the 64-year-old, with 36 years of managerial experience, has been working as a technical director at the Promotion Fund of Vietnamese Football Talent (PVF) academy.
